Although there has been recent shake-up at the Google’s Alphabet-owned company Nest, It hasn’t stopped making home security products for consumers which they are good at. On Wednesday the company announced an easy to use security camera for outdoor use called Nest Cam Outdoor that is geared to protect your home from intruders before they enter your property.
The Nest Cam Outdoor comes with a IPX65 rated weatherproof case and a long 25-foot cable (a 10-foot cable attached directly to the camera, and another 15 footer with an AC adapter) that lets you wire it up to a power supply from the inside of your house, meaning you’ll never run out of battery. It packs a camera sensor that records quality 1080p videos at 30fps, a 130-degree wide-angle lens, and a night-vision mode powered by eight infrared LEDs. It’s also got a two-way speaker so you can chat with intruders or scare the shit out of your friends and family. It is easy to mount on any outdoor surface, according to the company, and even has a magnetic base for attaching to gutters. You don’t have to worry about burglars circumventing your security system by simply cutting the cable. Once the camera is unplugged, you’ll receive an alert on your phone, and you’ll be able to see the last thing it recorded. It can differentiate between people and things, too, so you won’t get a notification every time a squirrel runs past your front door.
The outdoor camera uses the same Nest Aware software as its indoor counterpart which is available for both Android & iOS. It sends alerts of motion and sounds within camera range to users’ smartphones. It also stores video captured by Nest cameras in the cloud — for a fee. Ten days of video history can be stored for $10 a month and 30 days for $30 a month & with the launch of Nest Cam Outdoor, the Nest Alert software will be improved to allow the system to distinguish between people and other objects in the camera’s view.
Nest Product Manager Mehul Nariyawala said, “Nest Cam Outdoor is one of the first, if not the first, security camera to offer features such as Talk and Listen and person alerts, It’s the first to offer 24/7 cloud recording — others only offer DVR-based 24/7 recording, which is hard to access when you’re away from home and easy for burglars to steal.” “It also has the first-ever IP67 rated outdoor adapter, so you don’t have to drill a hole in the wall to install your camera,” he added. They have also made a redesigned Nest app which is more user friendly than ever. Users will be able share password-protected video streams privately with other people. Great for when you need someone to keep an eye on your home for a short period of time. It also has a feature called “Spaces” which organizes a person’s suite of Nest products by the rooms they’re in. For example, if you have a Protect and Cam in the living room and a Cam in the upstairs bedrooms, that would could as two Spaces.
The Nest Cam Outdoor is set to hit the markets this fall for the reasonable price of $199. Presale orders for the Outdoor Cam starts today.
